Back in my day, music was actually good

I stopped listening to the radio many years ago. I just can’t take it.

As a teenager, I had two favorite alternative rock stations I listened to. I could turn on the radio at any time, and it was almost guaranteed that one of those stations would be playing a song I liked. Ah, those were the good ol’ days, and it’s amazing how music can trigger memories.

Slowly, it happened that the newer the band to air on one of these stations, the less I liked what I heard. At some point during my high-school years, and without being aware of it at the time, the type of music I liked started to crystallize.

Now, I despise any and all new “hit” music on the radio these days, and simply stick with whatever I had enjoyed when I was a teenager. Well, there has been some venturing into different genres of music that I enjoy, but majority of the bands I listen to now remains very similar to the ones I liked back then.

Realizing this, it’s funny to think that I used to make fun of my parents for not “getting” the music I liked. I just didn’t understand it, my music so good! How could they not like it?

Nope. My parents were stuck on the music popular back when they grew up. But why?

Listening to their “classic rock” reminds them of their teenage years.

Yes, the same was true for me: hearing songs I loved during my high-school years brings back those teenage memories. It wasn’t until I realized that my taste in music hadn’t budged much since high-school, that I could fully understand this. Now, slowly my teenage years music is becoming “classic alternative”, and not too many people younger than me listen to it.

With each generation comes “back in my day, music was actually good”.

Also back in my day, MTV and VH1 actually played music videos…
