{"id":650,"date":"2010-10-09T21:39:44","date_gmt":"2010-10-10T04:39:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mcclanahoochie.com\/blog\/?p=650"},"modified":"2015-04-26T20:55:15","modified_gmt":"2015-04-27T03:55:15","slug":"comfort-zone","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mcclanahoochie.com\/blog\/2010\/10\/comfort-zone\/","title":{"rendered":"Comfort Zone"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In Starbucks the other day, I was sitting with my laptop just trying to get some <a href=\"http:\/\/www.arrayfire.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">work<\/a> done, and enjoying my morning coffee.\u00a0I soon noticed there was a cute girl sitting alone across from me, on the other side of Starbucks with her laptop. Being fairly busy, I didn&#8217;t think much of it at first, and continued working.<\/p>\n<p>It didn&#8217;t take long before curiosity got the better of my peripheral vision, which led to periodic <em>glancing around <\/em>the room to look at her<em>.<\/em> It was then I realized she seemed to be doing the same to me, and a few minutes of avoiding glances\u00a0go by. Meanwhile, I was trying <em>really<\/em> hard to build up the courage to go talk to her. Why was this so hard?<\/p>\n<p>Negative thoughts start to fill my head: was she really looking at me?, will walking over and sitting next to her offend her?, will I&#8217;ll be distracting her?, what to say?,\u00a0does she even want to talk?, will I&#8217;ll be able to hold an interesting conversation?, or is she really just waiting for her boyfriend to show up?&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Torn with conflicting emotions, I sat; thinking; wishing.<br \/>\n(By now I had\u00a0definitely\u00a0ruined the\u00a0<em>three second rule.)<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"  aligncenter\" title=\"comfort zone\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/farm4.static.flickr.com\/3545\/3333216967_6e5ae73e02.jpg?resize=442%2C253\" alt=\"\" width=\"442\" height=\"253\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Sadly, and shamefully, I never did go talk to her, and she left a few minutes later.\u00a0Sigh, <em>yet another<\/em> missed opportunity to talk to someone.\u00a0This particular situation was very special though.<\/p>\n<p>For the first time, I realized that\u00a0<em><span style=\"color: #808080;\">watching her walk away without ever talking to her was much worse than all the thoughts I had about what could have gone wrong.<\/span> <\/em>For example, if I had just simply walked over and said &#8220;hi&#8221;, this post would be entirely different &#8211; for better or for worse, it doesn&#8217;t matter &#8211; it&#8217;s too bad though that I&#8217;ll never know.<\/p>\n<p>Even if I&#8217;m wrong, and over-analyzing everything\u00a0above, I still felt like crap sitting there, desperately\u00a0wanting to introduce myself to someone, only to watch her walk out the door and be gone forever.<\/p>\n<p>Usually\u00a0I take <span style=\"color: #333333;\">comfort<\/span> in my introverted\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.personalitypage.com\/INTJ.html\" target=\"_blank\">personality<\/a> type, but it&#8217;s moments like this that remind me of how many potential friends I might be missing out on by simply remaining shy around people.<\/p>\n<p>So, I&#8217;m writing this for motivation to practice overcoming shyness. You only get good at something with practice.
